waxing frequently asked questions
Make sure that the area(s) to be waxed are clean.
- Do not consume adult beverages prior to your waxing appointment
- Do not exfoliate the day of your waxing appointment, this will make the skin more sensitive
- There are certain medications and products that should not be taken or used if you plan to have a waxing treatment soon. Topical creams used on the area to be waxed such as Retin-A, Renova, Salicylic, Benzonly Peroxide and hydroquinone, oral acne medications such as Accutane, blood-thinning medications, and topical/oral cortisone make the skin more sensitive and increase the likelihood of irritation or complications. Please check with your doctor if you are unsure whether you should be waxed while on or using a medication
Ingrown hairs are possible after waxing, as waxing removes the entire hair from the root. Your skin will naturally harden and thicken over the waxed area, so it’s important to gently exfoliate that area. Use a gentle scrub 48 hours after waxing and continue to exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week. Additionally, use an ingrown hair serum to prevent irritation and breakouts. Try to wear loose-fitting clothes for a few days after waxing to allow your skin to breathe and reduce moisture, especially in areas where we tend to perspire the most, such as the bikini, lip, and underarms. Perspiration and moisture can cause bacteria to grow, so it’s important to avoid exercises that increase perspiration and chafing for about 24-48 hours after waxing.
For best results, the hair should be between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch long. If you have coarse hair, it should be closer to 1/2 inch for the first wax. After the first wax, the hair becomes finer and can be waxed at a shorter length. It may take up to three or four waxes at a Salem, Oregon hair removal and waxing salon to achieve smooth skin because hair grows in three stages and is never all at the same stage. It’s important to avoid shaving between waxing appointments, as this will interrupt the process and stimulate hair growth, preventing you from achieving the full effect.
“No, waxing does not cause hair to grow more. In fact, regular waxing can lead to sparser and finer hair growth. When hair is shaved, it’s cut off at the skin’s surface, resulting in stubble. However, when hair is properly waxed and removed from the root, new hair grows back finer without stubble. The only known factors that stimulate hair growth are hormones, whether natural or artificial.”
Make sure to wear loose-fitting clothes to your appointment.
“Absolutely not. Waxing does not cause your hair to grow more. In fact, when you become a regular waxer, you will notice that your hair will become quite sparse and not as coarse. When hair is shaved, it is cut off at the thick skin’s surface, which is why you can feel stubble the next day. When properly waxed, hair is removed from the root, and when the hair starts to grow back, it is a new hair, very fine at the tip, so no stubble. The only things known to stimulate hair growth are hormones: natural or artificial.”
